Athlete Stories

Scott Clark

How did you first become involved in triathlon?

Watching my friends do it. I wanted to, but couldn't swim!

Can you share a memorable experience from your triathlon journey?

In October 2008, I finally swam 25 meters, the length of the pool. That night I registered for Ironman Lake Placid for the following July.

What advice would you give to someone considering their first triathlon?

Learn how to swim would be number 1. If you can, practice some open water swimming. The pool and the ocean are not the same! Biking and running will come easy if you can master the swim.

Group Open water Swimming July/August every Wednesday at 6pm at Fin Folk Food beach. Check out our facebook for details!

Can you share a memorable experience from your triathlon journey?

In the second year of the TriLobster, I won my age group in the Sprint Duathlon.

I heard that it was a world qualifier but didn’t know what that meant. Marian Grant told me I was qualified to compete in the World Championships in Penticton. I gave it a little thought and decided that if I qualified, what not give it a go.I had no idea how I would do and the bike leg was a challenging mountainous ride.I remember texting with my sons immediately after the race and they told me I finished in a tie with a guy from Australia for seventh place…I was thrilled!

Jesse Shields

How did you first become involved in triathlon?

I first became involved with multisport in 2023 when I decided to try out the Sprint Duathlon distance at TriLobster. I started off as a runner in late 2022 but wanted to challenge myself with the cycling aspect as well. After having minor heart surgery in 2020, I knew I wanted to strengthen my heart and live a long and healthy life. The cardiovascular benefit, social aspect and competitive nature of endurance sports provided me with just what I needed.

Do you have any favorite memories from past TriLobster Triathlons?

I have many great memories the last 2 years at TriLobster, from meeting new people to standing on the podium. But I think my favourite memory is meeting my wife Ellen out on the bike course while she is competing in her event, the Sprint Triathlon.

What advice would you give to someone considering their first triathlon?

My advice would be to embrace the experience, have fun and race your own race.

Can you share a memorable experience from your triathlon journey?

I was so proud to be able to represent Canada in the Sprint Duathlon event at the 2017 Multisport World Championships in Penticton, BC and then again in 2018 in Odense, Denmark. I remember during the bike portion of the race, glancing around to see other riders from Mexico, UK, Australia, and Spain, all riding in the pack together. It was so surreal to be working with and competing against athletes from all over the world!

Do you have any favorite memories from past TriLobster Triathlons?

The first time I competed at the TriLobster was the first time I’d ever rode my bike on a closed course. It was so exciting to have the road all to ourselves and to try to take advantage of drafting as much as possible. The TriLobster was a great, well organized event!

What advice would you give to someone considering their first triathlon?

Go for it! Duathlons and triathlons are a great way to vary your training. And the community of people are so welcoming!
